Breast Cancer Prevention: Everyday Habits to Reduce Your Risk

Fear for breast cancer is widespread. Many people haven’t realized that adopting healthy living habits can improve their overall health and help keep life-threatening ills at bay. Having a risk factor for breast cancer doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get the disease. Statistics show that one in every eight women in the United States will get breast cancer. While there isn’t a sure way or method to prevent this disease, there are changes you can make in your lifestyle to significantly reduce your breast cancer risk. Here are some of the habits you can adopt to reduce your own risk of breast cancer. 

Quit Smoking

Cigarette smoking over a long time has been shown to increase the risk of invasive breast cancer in women. The age when you start smoking, how much tobacco you smoke, and the number of years you smoke all affect how likely you’re to get breast cancer. You have to quick smoking if you want to reduce your risk for breast cancer. It’s also important that you avoid second hand smoke. 

Maintain a Healthy Weight

As your B.M.I (body mass index) increases, so does your risk of developing breast cancer. You might want to go see your doctor so you can have your body mass index measured. Too many fat cells in the body produce estrogen and insulin growing factors which can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. One of the most important things you can do, as a woman, to reduce your breast cancer risk is to avoid becoming overweight and obese in adult life. 

Get Moving

Preforming physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer and help breast cancer patients live longer. You should aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Regular exercise improves insulin regulation, blood circulation, energy balance, and metabolism. As a result, there’s a reduction in the production of unhealthy breast cells that lead to cancer. Exercise can also help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your bones and joints flexible. 

Reduce your Alcohol Intake

Research shows than women who consume 2 to 5 drinks of alcohol a day are forty percent more likely to develop the disease than nondrinkers. The more you drink, the higher the risk for developing breast cancer. You better limit your alcohol intake to no more than a drink per day. 

Eat a Healthy Diet

Your diet should comprise of fiber-rich vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. You should avoid sugar sweetened foods and drinks and minimize protein foods that are rich in saturated fats. Stay away from refined sugars and animal fats. If snacking is a must, be sure to carry healthy snacks like yogurt, almonds, or fresh veggies and fruits. This will help you avoid unhealthy foods with high sugar or fat content when the hunger pangs arrive. 

You shouldn’t forget to take care of your mental health as it may affect your overall health and ability to cope with cancer. Getting screened for breast cancer won’t prevent the disease, but will help you find it at the earliest stages when it can be managed and treated.
